Objective To investigate the effects of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on the activation of the cerebellum and other brain regions during working memory tasks. Methods Twelve children with ADHD and 12 normal controls matched for age, gender, profit and education level were selected as the research object. The fMRI and the classified n-back working memory task were used to study the effects of major events such as cerebellum on ADHD children No change in brain activation. Results The left posterior cerebelloptic activation in ADHD children was significantly weaker than that in the normal controls (P <0.01). Conclusions Children with ADHD show left posterior cerebellar dysfunction in performing n-back working memory tasks. Cerebellar hypofunction and the dysfunction of the cognitive circuits in the higher cognitive circuits may be the neural basis for behavioral abnormalities in children with ADHD.
