元杂剧的结构体制是由曲词建立的,曲的功用是多方面的,代言抒情、戏剧冲突之发生、戏剧主旨均展现于其中。曲文完整的《元刊杂剧三十种》取得了文学的身分,拥有了固定的文学形式,完成了元杂剧文本体制的定型。《剑桥中国文学史》元杂剧部分的论述夸大了意识形态对于文学的影响,由新历史主义出发走向历史虚无主义,受“古史辨派”影响,在疑古方面没有掌握好分寸。
