20世纪初的欧洲油画已是主义、派别众多的多元艺术,而中国选择以写实为主的油画体系则是历史之必然。首先,苦难的中国需要贴近生活,贴近平民的艺术,其次抗战的全面爆发更为乡土油画的发展提供了机遇,在民族存亡的生死关头,文艺要以唤醒民众的麻木意识,团结起来共同御敌为己任。再则,也是重要的一点,中国自古以来就是农业大国,在历次的社会大变革中,人数占绝对优势的农民群体无疑是推动历史过程的生力军,他们的命运和性格,基本代表了中国革命的命运和中华民族的主题性格,其遭遇或多或少地反映了中华民族的艰辛历程。他们的生存状态,精神面貌和社会地位就是那个时代的缩影。
