In Shanghai, the coast of the East China Sea and the Yangtze River estuary to the mouth of the motherland, foreign trade exports increased by 24.5% in the first half of this year, setting a new historical record. The proportion of foreign trade in exports to GDP rose to 39.57% from 34.02% in the same period of last year. The phenomenon that the growth rate of export trade has been below the GDP growth has become a historical phenomenon. In the first half of this year, the export growth rate was 10.9% higher than the GDP growth rate and for the first time reached the stage of economic take-off in Asia. All this shows that the export of foreign trade has begun to become the “leader” of Shanghai’s economic development. Brilliant history and embarrassing reality Shanghai’s foreign trade has had a brilliant history. Before liberation, Shanghai used to be the economic, financial and trade center of the Far East and its position was far above that of Hong Kong. Its exports accounted for about 40% of the national total. After the liberation, due to the dual protection of the centrally planned economy and the closed domestic market, the export of foreign trade increased rapidly at a time, and its share in total national exports also rose from 28.1% in 1952 to 38.5% in 1970.
