我国第一辆KDZ1交流电动车组,于1989年7月7日,在铁道部科学研究院环行铁道试验基地试运,达到设计最高速度14Okm/h的要求,其中一次以141k/h的速度持续了一段时间,这在环行铁道基地是第一次,而且在我国机车动车历史上也属首创。该电动车组是根据铁道部科技发展规划,为满足城市间中距离高速运行需要、增强客运能力而研制的。由于应用的新技术多,难度较大,全靠国内自己的力量设计研制,其任务主要落在长春客车厂、株洲电力机车研究所和铁道部科学研究院三个单位,经过十年奋战,于1988年8月完成组装,
