《工人日报》从8月30日到9月5日以大量篇幅宣传报道青藏铁路建设。8月30日以头版头条半版,4版上半版刊发有关青藏铁路建设报道文字4条、资料1条青藏铁路示意图1幅、照片3张。《开栏的话》说,这一报道目的是“更全面地报道青藏铁路建设取得的重大突破,报道铁路建设者的精神风貌,报道保护高原生态环境的真实情况”;为此,该报总编辑盛明富率报道小组赴青藏铁路二期工地,穿越可可西里和藏北无人区、世界铁路最高点唐古拉山垭口和世界铁路海拔最高的风火山隧道等关键工地。
