现代性及其危机都源于世界图景的机械化,而浪漫派自然哲学便是对现代性的美学反动。德国浪漫派认为,二元论是现代性之分裂状况的哲学标志,其实质是一种权威性的支配与统治关系,因而,立足于先验主体的自由理念落空了;同时,他们也认为,只有自然与自由得到和解之处,自由成为可能,因而,拯救自由的根本途径在于拯救自然。浪漫派自然哲学通过对物质概念的动力学重构,提出一种有机论自然观和艺术观,最终在“新神话”理念中表达为一种美学现代性方案。浪漫派自然哲学诚然在现代科学中不具有建设性作用,但它触及现代世界的正当危机问题,从而获得深刻的思想史意义。
