Korf Engineering, U.S. Steel, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will jointly submit a report to the Department of Energy to apply for a coal-to-coal process activity fund to build a large KR process furnace worth US$100 million. It is located in Tieshan City, Minmetals, near the US Steel Mintac Powder Metallurgy Plant. The construction period is 2 years. The hot metal from the KR furnace is similar to that from the blast furnace, but no coke is required. Corvette Engineering, a member of the VOEST-Alpine consortium, says that this process can be used as a fuel for a wide variety of coals, including coal for steam boilers. The main custodian will be a manufacturer that requires high-purity iron in the foundry industry. The coal industry process fund is set at US$ 400 million to help develop coal technology through federal funds. But the federal funds will not exceed 50% of the total investment in the project. It will be determined by the Department of Energy how to allocate. (US publication “Technology Update” dated April 28, 1986)
