The American sinologist Ge Haowen is the man who made the most contribution to the English translation of contemporary Chinese and contemporary literature. Most Chinese scholars have sporadically learned about his translation ideas from several of his interviews a decade or more ago. After many years of translation practice, Ge Haowen’s translation thinking constantly evolves. In his recent interview with American scholar Jonathan Stalling, he systematically studied his own experience of learning Chinese and his subsequent translations, his ideas and methods in literary translation, his views on contemporary Chinese writers and Chinese contemporary literature Integration and explanation, also clarified some misunderstandings of Chinese scholars about their translation thoughts. Understanding these interviews is of great importance to both Chinese scholars engaged in literary translation and writers engaged in literary creation.
