As a great humanist in the 16th century, Shakespeare held aloft the great banner of humanism in almost all of his dramatic writing. Among his comedies, tragedies and tragicomes, Shakespeare praises the infinite strength of mankind, praises young men and women for their persistent pursuit of innocent love, affirms the new bourgeois women and expresses his firm belief in a bright future for mankind. And these are completely reproduction of humanism, reflecting the humanism light. But in his later works, Shakespeare became tired of social reality. He began to consciously mix Christianity with humanism. As a result, Christian thought gained the upper hand, while humanism began its inevitable decline. This article attempts to analyze the gradual decline of humanism from Shakespeare ’s last drama, The Tempest.
