唐宋之际,湖湘文化兴起,邵阳文人名士渐多,他们刻苦自励,颖悟好学,广泛交游,增长阅历,中科举者也渐渐增多。无论是处于乡里,还是为官游历,他们都坚持礼智忠直的基本准则,注重名誉,坚守品节。其时又常有动乱,武夫悍将兴起,其胆略气概超乎常人,待朋友、乡邻以信义,为有恩于已者冒死报仇,誓死捍卫乡里,使百姓不受侵扰,血性刚烈,不怕死,敢任事,同仇敌忾,一致对外。此时的邵阳籍名人多笃于乡里事务,尤其致力于赡济宗族,详定制度,可谓是中国古代由贵族型家族制度向明清之际的普及型家族制度转型之生动体现。
