This article reports the epidemic of dengue in the northern part of Juxian County, Hainan Island in 1985, and isolated 11 viruses from Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus in the blood of the patients and the endemic mosquitoes of the region. It has been identified as Type 2 dengue virus. At the same time, antibodies to the virus were measured in two sera from patients and were more than four-fold increased, confirming the dengue virus. The higher rates of isolation, serum antibody determinations, and the potential role of Culex pipiens pallens as a vector of dengue are discussed.
