Water resources management is facing the challenge of responding to droughts, population growth and water cuts, predicting climate change while still ensuring adequate water supplies to meet demand. In order to develop effective household demand management processes, water managers need to be aware of the factors that may affect household water use. By examining and re-analyzing the current water consumption behavior model, we propose a new model for understanding household water consumption. We discuss the role that trust plays in residents’ water consumption because people do not consciously save water (interpersonal trust) if they feel that people around them do not minimize their use of water. In addition, people are less likely to save water (trust in public institutions) if they do not trust water management. This paper presents a study of the role of trust in water consumption in order to fully understand the factors involved in determining household water use behavior.
