石竹在唐代已广为栽培,李白的“石竹绣罗衣”,杜甫的“麝香眠石竹”,都是赞石竹的佳句。陆龟蒙的《石竹花咏》更为绝妙:“曾看南朝画国娃,古罗衣上碎明霞;而今莫与金钱斗,买断春风是此花。”诗人的风趣,石竹的美貌,开花的时间,古代的风俗,融于一体,妙趣横生。 石竹花也被称为母亲花,这其中有一个鲜为人知的传说故事。东北的一座大山中住着一对孤儿寡母,年迈的母亲与儿子石竹相依为命,日子过得很艰难。
