《中学教学语法系统提要(试用)》在概述部分谈到五个问题:一、语素,是最小的语音语义结合体,是最小的语法单位;二、词,是由语素构成的;三、短语,是由词组成的;四、句子,由词或短语构成,是语言的使用单位;五、句群,是前后衔接连贯的一组句子,有一个明晰的中心思想。可以看出,词是大于语素的语言单位,短语是大于词的语言单位,语素、词、短语都不是语言的使用单位,是备用单位;句子是语言的使用单位,而句群又是大于句子的语言片断。《提要》把句群划入了语法教学的范围。
