刘师培在中国传统文论积累的基础上,融合西方社会学知识,向多个维度拓展现代意义的文学社会学研究,在文学与社会的交汇点上为文学寻求社会、时代、地理环境等参照物,推进了文艺社会学的近代发展,体现出开阔的学术视野和良好的中西学知识结构,具有特定的时代和历史意义。尽管由于特殊的思想环境和学术环境,刘氏在文艺社会学的理论体系建构方面尚有缺憾,但却不能因此抹煞其在中国文论从传统走向现代进程中的可贵努力。深入探讨刘师培在文艺社会学领域的研究成果,有助于彰显刘氏在中国近代文论史上的应有地位,恢复其因政治失节而湮没不显的学术成就。
