2001年12月26日,随着大佛寺长江大桥及渝黔高速公路一期工程竣工通车,重庆市的道路建设跨上了一个新的台阶,重庆公路基础设施建设步伐之快、技术实力之强引来了全国同行关注的目光。大佛寺长江大桥为预应力混凝土双塔平行双索面斜拉桥,主跨450米、塔高206米,位居亚洲已建成同类桥型之首,成为重庆外环路上一颗璀璨的明珠,也成为新重庆的标志性建筑之一。在重庆人对这些第一深感自豪时,也牢牢记住了大桥设计者的名字——重庆交通科研设计院。
