Frequency guidance systems used in electronic warfare include guidance systems such as answering jammers, frequency storage rings (radio frequency or optical), coherent digital radio frequency memories, and closed-loop voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). Closed-loop frequency-guided systems that use analog phase and frequency locking have many advantages in cost and performance. Their performance is discussed with frequency accuracy, bandwidth, lock time, stability, and simultaneous multi-signal performance. The paper gives some experimental results that can show the typical locking performance. Future ECM systems may have to respond to very short (<50nS) pulses. Acousto-optic and fiber-optic pulse broadening techniques can be used to meet this requirement.
