翁衮是蒙古语音译,是古代蒙古族供奉的一种偶像,或称之为神偶,也是萨满师的神具之一,供祭祀或作法时用。蒙古族的翁衮(偶像)崇拜观念,源自于普遍信奉萨满教的远古氏族社会时期,是北方草原民族共同信奉的萨满教神偶。翁衮的作用主要体现在“作为人和动物的保护神”“祭祀或躯鬼活动时使用的道具”“治病救人”“施以咒语后依照萨满师的指挥行事”等四个方面。翁衮崇拜的产生和演变过程,大体上经历了对自然物的崇拜、对动物灵魂的崇拜、对祖先灵魂的崇拜三个阶段。17世纪中叶以后,翁衮作为萨满教的崇拜对象,曾受到过格鲁派藏传佛教僧侣和蒙古上层贵族的严厉禁止、打压和焚烧。
