胡萝卜的来历根据苏联科学家在《栽培植物的起源中心》中的记述,胡萝卜起源于阿富汗的喜马拉雅山和兴都库什山地区,约在10世纪传入伊朗和阿拉伯地区,到11世纪又经阿拉伯国家传到叙利亚,随后进入欧洲。到了15世纪,胡萝卜已传遍欧洲大陆。除了向西方传播外,在13世纪末,胡萝卜也开始进入中国。最初传到中国的胡萝卜不是现在这个样子的,其外表呈紫色或黄色。明代李时珍在《本草纲目》曾这样记载:“元时始自胡地来,气味微似萝卜,故名。”但也有学者认为是西汉武帝时,由张骞出使西域,通过丝绸之路,经中亚、西亚带至中国的。如果这种说法正确的话,那么胡萝卜传入中国的历史就已经有2000多年了。
