India, as an important part of its military expansion at sea, is stepping up the implementation of the very grand “Seabird Project”: building an integrated strategic naval base in Garvar, North Kandahar, Karnataka, west coast of the country. The first phase of the Galwar base was completed in January 2005 and was subsequently opened to naval vessels. The site is set to be officially operational in May 2005 and the Indian Navy has named INS Kadamba the last name of the famous Kadanba family in India. When the second phase of the project is completed, the old fishing village of Garvar will soon become the largest and most modern specialized naval port in Asia and will also be the homeport of the Indian Navy’s future “Gorshkov” aircraft carrier.
