OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the lipid profile and diabetic retinopathy and the association of oxidized low density lipoprotein between type 2 diabetic patients and other systemic diseases. METHODS: Cross-sectional studies included 40 diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy and 40 diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy. Collect demographic information and conduct a detailed eye examination. Nine mL of venous blood was collected on fasting and serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, LDL and HbA1c were analyzed. Results: Mean serum cholesterol in diabetic retinopathy was 5.9 ± 1.86 mmol / L and in non-diabetic retinopathy patients was 5.0 ± 1.03 mmol / L (P = 0.001). Serum LDL was 3.6 ± 1.69 mmol / L in the diabetic retinopathy group and 3.0 ± 1.02 mmol / L in the control group (P = 0.005). Compared with patients with mild to moderate retinal exudation, serum cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein were higher in patients with severe retinal exudation, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.082, 0.116, 0.218). In patients with severe hard exudation, mean serum levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein were high to moderate to moderate. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean oxidized low-density lipoprotein between the duration of diabetes mellitus and whether other systemic diseases were complicated. CONCLUSIONS: Serum cholesterol and LDL are significantly associated with diabetic retinopathy, while serum lipids analysis is not associated with severity of retinal rigid exudate. Our study found no correlation between serum oxidized low density lipoprotein and diabetic retinopathy and other systemic diseases combined.
