容闳家名达萌、字纯甫,广东香山(后改中山、出生地现划归珠海)县人。清道光八年十一月十一日(1828年11月17日)生于距澳门四公里许的南屏镇。父炳炎,母林氏,务农兼捕鱼虾;有兄姐各一。七岁随父至澳门,在英国传教士办的西塾上学,以贫故,免交学费。 1840年父亲病逝,闳才十二岁,先后兼作小贩及天主教印刷厂童工。 1841年转到原西塾起发人之一的玛礼逊学校念书,继续享受免费待遇,不久随校迁香港,总共在港澳受过六年西方教育。 1847年该校校长美国人勃朗返国,自愿携学生容闳、黄胜、黄宽赴美,先入马萨诸塞州的孟松学校(相当高中),一
Rong Yung home name Meng, the word pure Fu, Guangdong Xiangshan (later renamed Zhongshan, the birthplace is placed under Zhuhai) County.
