Lianyungang is one of the few seaports in old China where self-improvement, self-development and opening to the outside world took place under imperialist monopoly of our maritime right. After more than half a century of tortuous development, it has risen to one of the eight major seaports in the country today and is listed as one of the 70 key construction projects in the country during the “6th Five-Year Plan”. Port cities and ports depend on each other, relying on the port take-off economy, open to overseas window. In 1984, Lianyungang City has been identified by the central government as one of the 14 port cities for further opening up.
