The phenomenon of heat transfer has been of great practical importance,going all the way back to the days when heat was believed to be a fluid that flowed between media of different temperatures.By properly guiding this flow of caloric,engines could generate work,objects could be warmed or cooled,and thermal equilibrium could be achieved.While today these simple theories of heat transfer have been replaced by a more modem understanding of heat as disordered energy,the control of its flux is of no less importance.Rather,heat transfer and thermodynamics are now also of central importance to modem technologies including power generation and conversion,night vision,microelectronics,aerospace,etc.
