1999年2月11日,我国现当代著名作家、记者、翻译家、中央文史研究馆馆长、《世纪》杂志编委会主任萧乾先生因病在北京逝世,享年90岁。萧老晚年任中央文史研究馆馆长,他提议由中央文史研究馆与上海市文史研究馆联合主办《世纪》杂志,并亲自与文坛耆宿冰心女士共同领衔,担任编委会主任。他不顾年迈体弱,身体力行,与中央文史研究馆的编委们一起审读文稿,关心杂志的成长和发展。他还把与夫人文洁若女士合译的世界名著《尤利西斯》一书的全部稿酬,捐赠给了《世纪》杂志。为了表达编辑部同仁对萧老的感激和怀念之情,本刊特请巴金先生之弟、上海市文史研究馆馆员纪申先生撰文悼念萧老,并刊发一组照片,主要由文洁若老供稿,亦有部分是由萧老生前赠送上海市文史研究馆顾娟馆员留念的。
On February 11, 1999, Mr. Xiao Qian, a famous writer and reporter in our country, a translator and curator of the Central Research Institute of History and Culture, and director of the Editorial Board of Century, died at the age of 90 due to illness in Beijing. Xiao Lao was appointed director of the Central Research Institute of Chinese Literature and History in the late Qing Dynasty. He proposed that the Central Research Institute of Literature and History and the Shanghai Municipal Museum of History and Research jointly sponsor “Century” magazine and personally lead the literary altar, Ms. Bing Xin, to serve as director of Editorial Board. In spite of his frailness and strength, he reviewed the manuscript with the editorial board of the Central Museum of Chinese History and Culture and was concerned about the growth and development of the magazine. He also donated the full remuneration of the world famous book “Ulysses”, which was translated by Ms. Wen Jieuo with her wife, to Century Magazine. In order to express his appreciation and remembrance to Xiao Lao, my colleague from the editorial department asked Mr. Ba Jin, the librarian of Shanghai Museum of History, to write a tribute to Xiao Lao and publish a group of photos, mainly composed of Wen Jie If the old manuscript, there are also some donated by Xiao Lao Sheng Shanghai Cultural and Historical Research Museum Gu Juan librarian for the day.
