The relationship between endocrine function and immunity has only recently been recognized, but the role of hormones in lymphoid tissues has been virtually documented for at least 60 years. Most studies are performed in animals and are mainly focused on adrenocorticotropic hormones. Adrenalectomy has been found in almost every animal to result in an absolute increase in the total lymphoid tissue weight, while the regulation of adrenal cortical hormones leads to lymph node regression. Rupture of the mandible and similar stimulating effects after ovariectomy have been reported, and hormonal therapy is also associated with degeneration of the lymphoid tissue leading to renin. These two examples from a large number of studies on the relationship between hormones and lymphoid tissues demonstrate a basic principle
