In the early 1800s, maritime commerce was severely damaged by the repeated attacks by U.S. merchant vessels on the North African coast, and a series of maritime conflicts broke out between the nascent United States of America and several Muslim lords on the North African coast in order to survive. In the fall of 200 years and in the fall of 1803, US Navy Brigadier Edward Preble took the flagship Constitutional Command to command the Third Mediterranean Corps to travel far and wide to Tripoli, Libya. Shortly after he arrived, he heard a bad news: the fleet of the No. 3 Mediterranean Sentinel, just behind the flagship, flew into the hands of the Tripoli, and the officers and soldiers surrendered. Preble accused the ship’s officers and crew “would rather be taken prisoner than be willing to dedicate themselves, and it is a disgrace to the United States Navy!”
