Berenice Abbott (July 17, 1898 - December 9, 1991) is an American photographer who was known to display New York streets and buildings in black and white in the 1930s. At the same time, she also gave a permanent picture of New York gay community in Paris in the 1920s and in the 1930s and 1960s. Abbott was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1898 and briefly attended Ohio State University before moving to New York in 1918. In New York, she lives in the village of Greenwich, home to literary men and artists in New York and other cities in the United States. Djuna Barnes (a 20th-century American legendary woman whose novel focuses on homosexuality) is her roommate, Man Ray
