三茂铁路从三水至茂名全长322km,途经肇庆、阳江、茂名三市七县,是国家规划内的路网干线。1983年至1985年,铁道部、化工部和广东省共同投资建成三水至腰古段9lkm,同时修通了腰古至云浮硫铁矿35km支线。1987年,为解决广东交通严重滞后,适应改革开放的形势需要,广东省政府决定自筹资金修建腰茂铁路,并为此成立了广东省三茂铁路公司,担负起三腰云段铁路运营和腰茂铁路的建设任务。经过三年零三个月的努力,使三茂铁路全线建成通车。三茂铁路的建成,填补了粤西铁路的空白,使广茂铁路全线贯通,从而把京广、广深,黎湛铁路和正在建设中的广梅汕铁路相互
Sanmao Railway from Sanshui to Maoming full-length 322km, via Zhaoqing, Yangjiang, Maoming three counties seven counties, is the national planning within the road network.
