According to the data provided by the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), the US TRI (toxic chemicals release) dropped by 11% from 1989 to 1990, and the industrial sector is not surprised by the recent TRI. The data provided by about 24,000 factories in section 313 of SARA title III has a staggering reduction in toxic chemical emissions of 600 x 10-6 pounds (equivalent to 27,000 tons). Last year’s (1991) TRI report disclosed that the rate of decline was even greater at 18%. This data was obtained based on long-term data collected. A spokeswoman for Dow Chemical Corporation in the United States believes that the decline in TRI is attributed to the increase in “public accountability” in the industry. Sharon Eisel, Dow Chemical’s publication manager, said on the issue of SARA and pollution protection: “People want to see the reduction of pollution, we have to keep this issue in mind.”
