HOUSTON: The researchers pointed out that a device designed to measure respiratory sinus arrhythmias (RSA) in the heart can provide a non-invasive, painless and rapidly regimen of adriamycin cardiotoxicity. William J Hrushesky, inventor of the device, said the instrument measures the hardness of the heart indirectly, reflecting the health of the entire structure of the heart. He said at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists here that the first clinical application of the device was reported, the researchers evaluated the effects of doxorubicin on the heart of 20 cancer patients. Hrushesky, MD, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Minnesota, said RSA’s heart rate difference between inspiration and expiration during calm can be as high as 20 beats per minute for young athletes and as low as zero for an elderly patient or a heart attack. But so far, thanks
