Born without limbs2 for no medical reason, Nick Vujicic knew from an early age that he was different.
Nick Vujicic, the 32-year-old motivational3 speechmaker of Attitude is Altitude, was born without arms or legs. Though he struggles4 with some little nothings of everyday living (brushing teeth, for example), he has become an inspirational speaker.
There is no medical explanation for Vujicic’s physical disability. He has a small foot on his left hip which helps him balance. He can type, pick things up between his toes and even kick a ball. Confidence didn’t come naturally to Vujicic. Growing up in Melbourne, Australia, he struggled with depression5 and was bullied6 at school. When he was just 10 years old, he attempted suicide. Thanks to his family’s strong support and selfless love over time, Vujicic adopted a positive attitude, and, thrived in his teenage and young adult years despite being bullied. After his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability when he was seventeen, he started to give public talks. The charismatic Australian now travels the world addressing huge crowds. He has visited more than 50 countries and given thousands of talks.
Because of Nick’s unique personal story, he is able to speak to groups of all kinds—both the young and old, impoverished7, imprisoned, business people, children, peoples of all races and those with disabilities. No matter where he goes he communicates one core message—that no matter your circumstance, you can overcome! Here’s what he said in one of his powerful speeches:
“I felt like I was a burden to those around me and the sooner I go, the better it’d be for everyone. I wanted to end my pain and end my life at a young age, but I am thankful once again, for my parents and family who were always there to comfort me and give me strength.
Due to my emotional struggles I had experienced with bullying, self-esteem8 and loneliness, God has implanted9 a passion of sharing my story and experiences to help others cope with whatever challenge they have in their life and let God turn it into a blessing. To encourage and inspire others to live to their fullest potential and not let anything get in the way of accomplishing their hopes and dreams.”
