烧失量是土壤矿质全量分析中的一个不可缺少的测定项目。烧失量是指:烘干土在马福炉高温灼烧下失去重量的部分。通常认为它应包括:有机质、结合水以及碳酸盐中的二氧化碳等。烧失量的测定因操作比较简单而往往不被重视。但全量分析结果以烘干土为计算基础时,需在各分量总和中加上烧失量才能使结果接近于100%。另外,矿质全量分析又往往以灼烧土为基础而报出结果,也就是说以灼烧后的土重为基础来换算各矿质元素成分的百分含量。因而烧失量的测定无论对于分析资料的审核和结果的报出都有重要意义。同时,烧失量本身也是土壤的一大特性。这就要求对烧失量的测定精度高而准确。
