Hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei cells widely accept glutamatergic and GABAergic nerve terminals and form synaptic connections in their cell bodies. Stress can affect these synaptic connections and alter their plasticity, leading to changes in the stress response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis).
