从发生学角度可以认为李劼人的早期白话小说创作是中国现代白话小说创作之路的基础,中国现代白话小说从发生到成熟的过程与李劼人早期白话小说经历的“起”、“承”、“转”、“合”是相似的。如果以李劼人早期白话小说经历的“起”、“承”、“转”、“合”为线索,可以判断中国现代白话小说是如何在传统小说基础上融入现代西方小说元素创造性地生成具有中国特色的现代白话小说。因此,对李劼人的挖掘发现,有意于完整呈现中国现代白话小说发生的历史现状。
