天地有五岳,恒岳居其北。岩峦叠万重,诡怪浩难测。人来不敢入,祠宇白日黑。有时起霖雨,一洒天地德。神兮安在哉,永康我王国。一贾岛《恒岳庙》。坐落在大同市浑源县城南的恒山,发脉于管涔山。有人称恒岳或常山,也有称之为“人天北柱”。恒山山雄地险,横贯塞上,西衔雁门关,东连太行山,南接五台诸峰,北控塞北盆地,山峰绵延,奔腾起伏,横跨250千米,号称108峰。4千年前,舜帝巡狩至此看到这里山势险峻,峰奇壁立,遂封恒山为北岳秦皇、汉武、唐宗、宋祖,都曾到恒山巡视、祭奠。道教洞仙张果老曾倒骑着毛驴在这里隐居潜修。
