华南钙质微生物岩产在二叠纪末生物大绝灭界线之上.根据其中的牙形石Hindeodusparvus化石,微生物岩的产出层位相当于浙江煤山剖面的27层.钙质微生物岩主要分布在生物礁相或浅水碳酸盐台地之上,向深水区逐渐尖灭.钙质微生物岩一般由微晶基质和中、粗晶方解石指状体或斑点所组成.微生物岩中的生物化石以微生物为主要特征,同时伴生有小型腹足类、介形虫和小型双壳类化石.这一以微生物为特征的生物化石组合代表了二叠纪末大绝灭后礁相及浅水碳酸盐台地相上残存下来的一个简单而又特殊的化石群落.大绝灭界线之上钙质微生物岩的突然出现是二叠纪末全球事件在礁相及浅水碳酸盐台地相上的具体反映.由于前人对二叠系-三叠系界线及事件的研究多集中在深水相或浅海陆棚中、下部剖面上,而华南钙质微生物岩则主要分布在浅水或极浅水礁相及碳酸盐台地相剖面上.因此,通过对钙质微生物岩的岩石学、古生物学及古生态的研究,将有助于人们能更全面地了解二叠纪-三叠纪之交全球事件在古海洋不同水深区的具体表现,为认识全球事件的实质和过程提供浅水礁相及碳酸盐台地相上的新资料.
