1961年底,周信芳筹划排演新编历史剧《澶渊之盟》。在他的授意下,陈西汀很快将剧本的初稿写了出来。第二年春天,我们接到去江苏、安徽、湖北、江西等四省巡回演出的任务。一起去的主要演员,有李玉茹、纪玉良、汪正华、孙正阳和我等人。根据领导上的要求,我们在演出传统戏的同时,还要抽出时间排练新戏《澶渊之盟》。在南京演了几天后,周信芳也从上海赶来了。当天中午,周信芳和我们一起吃饭时,着重研究《澶渊之盟》的剧本和排练问题。后来,我们转到汉口演出。周先生又从上海匆匆赶来,要亲自修改剧本,并参加排演。那时,周先生的眼睛已有毛病,写东西时,不仅要把字写得很大,而且照明灯也必须很亮才行。
