前言小麦穗子的小花有许多不能结实。Evans等提出,对结实可能存在一种相关的抑制机制,其性质也许是激素的作用。他们得出结论:开花前穗子中间部分的小穗,如其基部小花的花药发育得好,可能会阻碍麦穗基部和顶部小穗的结实。他们还发现,在相同的小穗中,如基部小花的子房有生活力,似乎就会妨碍小穗顶端子房的结实。Walpole等提出,最先结实的小花所产生的激素会影响维管系统的发育,从而抑制其余的小花。但Langer等的结论认为,只在某些限制性条件下,穗子的维管系统才是小麦结实的主要限制因素。下述试验是用几种外源生长物质处理麦穗的效果。

Suggested that the hormones produced by the first firmer florets would affect the development of the vascular system and inhibit the rest of the florets. However, Langer et al. Conclude that only under some restrictive conditions is the ear vascular system the main limiting factor for wheat robustness. The following test is the effect of treating ears with several exogenous growth substances.
