Researchers at the American Cancer Institute and the University of Washington report that alpha 1 thymidine, a hormone that activates the immune system, can also inhibit the replication of AIDS virus in vitro. This discovery shows a new way to develop AIDS vaccine. α_1 thymus hormone can stimulate the activity of T helper cells, and T helper cells is exactly the first violation of the AIDS virus. Researchers envision a conjugate of thymus hormones and AIDS virus because children with hereditary athymic hormone-producing ability develop an AIDS-like disease. A computer-based comparative study of viruses and thymus hormone proteins found that about half of thymus hormone components are the same as those of AIDS virus proteins. They injected the rabbits with α_1 thymus hormone and administered the antibodies they produce to AIDS-infected human cells, which have a protective effect on the cells in culture by the addition of antibodies.
