Monocytes and dendritic cell lines circulate in the blood and eventually migrate into the tissue, where they further mature and function as immune defenses. In recent years, the characteristics of surface markers of these cells have been analyzed in detail by flow cytometry, and the corresponding cell subpopulations have been found. The immunological nomenclature committee (consisting of 18 scientists led by Professor Loem Ziegler-Heitbrock, Institute of Immunology, University of Leicester, UK) uniformly names these cells and classifies human and mouse blood monocytes into three types : Classical monocytes, intermediate monocytes and non-classical monocytes; human and mouse blood dendritic cells are also divided into three types: plasmacytoid dendritic cells and two types of myeloid dendritic cells. The current classification and nomenclature have been approved by the International Society for Immunization and the nomenclature will better promote greater communication among scientists and even disciplines.
