AIM:The study evaluated the effects of br eathing helium-oxygen(79%heliox and 21%oxygen)on respiratory insufficiency by way of experimental and clinical observations.METHODS:Six mongrel dogs were randomly inspi red air or heiox after dripping 2%methac holine in tracheas controlled by 900C ventilator.During the experimenta l course,respiratory mechanical li mits,hemodynamic index and blood gas valu es were observed.Six ventilated pa-tients with COPD in the respiratory i ntensive care unit inspired heliox,and the data of respiratory mechanics were r ecorded.RESULTS:The results demon-strate that heliox can reduce airway resistance,airway pressure,and wo rk of breathing,improve lung effective c ompliance,but heliox has no side eff ects on pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.Heliox improves oxyge n dif-fusion and CO 2 climinating.CONCLUSION:Breathing heliox is one of the effective ways for patients with sev ere obstructive pulmonary diseases
