光绪六年(1880年)李鸿章致信德国工业巨头阿尔弗雷德.克虏伯,商谈购买战船与火炮之事。信函的内容表明:李鸿章与阿尔弗雷德有直接的书信往来;克虏伯公司力图向北洋推销新式军火;李鸿章曾留意克虏伯所造的“毕福脱”快船,但是拒绝对方为原有火炮更换新式炮弹的要求;李凤苞和徐建寅被寄予厚望。李鸿章重视与克虏伯等西方军火制造商保持直接的交往,双方相互派员成为北洋引进军事装备和相关技术的重要渠道。
