In Western Europe, the onion fly species is the only important onion onions, the larvae can cause great harm. Until 1965, the fly was kept under control with organic chlorides (DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin and Heptachlor); thereafter, the organic phosphides or carbamates were switched. Over the past decade, the organophosphorus tri-chloro-epidermis has been used exclusively to control maggots of onion species. After a detailed study of the different approaches to the control of insect infertility, we have successfully used this method to control Onion species. The results of a large-scale field trial (40 hectares) showed that the use of sterile insects to control onions
