泰山位居五岳之首,历来备受青睐,而帝王的封禅、致条活动,更确立了其独尊地位。泰山地位的尊崇,令四面八方的信众齐聚泰安,登临泰山,拜谒于泰山神下,成为泰山忠实的香客。据泰山现存碑刻、器物铭文、匾额塑像铭文、题名刻石及相关文献记载,明清时期泰山香客涉及今山东、河北、河南、北京、天津、江苏、浙江、安微、陕西、山西、福建、广东等近20个省市,地域分布极其广泛。然各地民众进香泰山的兴盛程度不一,究其原因则与位置的邻近、交通的便利与否、泰山神灵的影响所及、香客来源地泰山信仰的兴盛程度、香客来源地的经济发展水平等诸多因素有关。
