According to a report released June 23 by the World Conservation Monitoring Center in Cambridge, England, human activities are posing a growing threat to coral reefs. The center’s scientists call on all nations to take steps to protect one of the few “beautiful” resources on Earth. Coral reefs, known as “rainforests in the sea”, although contributing less than 0.25% of the global marine system, have become habitats for a quarter of marine fish. According to the latest report of the World Conservation Monitoring Center, it is estimated that the global economic output generated by coral reefs is as high as 375 billion U.S. dollars. More than 100 countries have benefited greatly from the development of coral reef tourism resources. However, the report of the World Natural Resources Conservation Monitoring Center also pointed out that human beings are not paying attention to the protection of this precious resource while exploiting and utilizing coral reefs. The report after two years of scientific investigation found that there are currently 100 in the world’s coral reefs
