On May 21, Premier Wen Jiabao chaired a State Council executive meeting to study and deploy the current earthquake relief and economic work. The meeting pointed out that on May 12, an 8-magnitude earthquake hit Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, which caused heavy losses to people’s lives and property. Under the unified arrangements and direct command of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, cadres and the masses in the disaster areas, the People’s Liberation Army, armed police officers and public security policemen took prompt action to fight the earthquake and relieve the disaster. The people of the whole nation will be united in one heart and one soul, with difficulties and all directions. Many earthquake-resistant heroic deeds emerged in the quake relief work, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of unity and struggle, unite the feelings and strength of Chinese at home and abroad, and increased the confidence and courage of the people of all ethnic groups in overcoming the disaster. At present, there are many difficulties and problems in quake relief. The roads in the hardest-hit areas can not be opened up and the security is rather difficult. Some incoming and outgoing disaster relief supplies in remote villages and rural areas are difficult to carry out.
