“Journal of Laser and Application” Reporter: What were you doing before the invention of the maser? Towns: I am working on microwave spectroscopy and studying the interaction between microwaves and molecules. This includes careful observation of the spectrum and interpretation of the molecular structure and the nuclear moment. At that time I was engaged in atomic and molecular physics, using microwaves as a means of spectroscopy. Reporter: Has everything developed from radar? Towns: In a sense, that’s it. During World War II, I developed a radar bomb targeting system so I was very familiar with radar. In fact, one of the systems I developed was at a wavelength of 1.25 centimeters, which is urgently needed by the Air Force. However, I think that this wavelength is unlikely to be absorbed by water vapor. I try
