Washington, DC - The U.S. Army’s ballistic missile defense program now emphasizes the development of optical detectors. The probe, in conjunction with the radar, enabled interceptor missiles to destroy Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles in farther distances. If intercepted before the reentry vehicle passes through the atmosphere, the area of land defeated by a single anti-missile base can be much larger than the mere use of terrestrial radars. Since the United States and the Soviet Union have reached an agreement to build only one anti-missile base, the United States is convinced that intercontinental ballistic missiles must be interceded outside the atmosphere in order to do a good job of defensive purposes.
